How much is too much?

Hello my lovelies,
Me!

I've not been around for a while, but am back to irritate the bejesus out of you all!

I read a blog the other day about how writers should behave on the interweb and how much you should share of your persona with your readers and other writers.

Apparently you should keep everything you post as impersonal as possible, because readers don't want to know about you, they only want to know about your characters.

You must definitely not express an opinion on anything, because you don't want to be construed as argumentative or petty.

And the biggest no-no of all is to respond to any review, whether it is positive or negative. There was even a suggestion that you shouldn't even click the "like" button on Goodreads!

Of course, we mustn't forget facebook, twitter and all the other mediums of social media out there. Keep the posts short and to the point and keep the public you completely separate from the personal one.

I took on board these points.
Digested them.
Mulled them over.
Spent all of five minutes on them before stating.... bollocks.

If you've taken the time to spend your hard-earned cash on one of my stories, I feel that the very least I can do is jump up and down on that "like" button. I may not comment, and I don't enter into arguments about reviews--if you don't like the story you don't like it, fair enough--but I will make sure you know I'm grateful to you for taking a chance on my story, whatever the outcome.

As for keeping the personal apart from the professional, I can't do that - probably because I consider everyone who bothers to friend request me, or follow me, my friend. Some are closer friends than others, but I'm more than happy to chew the fat with whoever wants to have a natter, whether you friended me because you like me as a person, or like me as a writer - hopefully one will lead to the other anyway. I'll post about my writing, I'll post that I'm pissed off because my ex was late again, or I'll post that the dog is sitting on the back doorstep in the sunshine, just like she's doing right now. It might not be that interesting for all, but if you want one part of me, you're going to get it all.

What is your take on it?

  1. I agree..as long as you are comfortable with what you reveal about yourself i say go for it. I like talking to the authors that I read and hope that, in some way, I can become friends with them because their work becomes my friend..if that makes any sense. So talk away and show all the pics you care too..I will be watching and reading :)
