They are so fun to watch and they watch back, although it’s even more fun to see them in the wild!

When I was in a zoo in Zimbabwe, we went to the reptile area. Our guide was friends with one of the zookeepers and pushed him to show us the snakes. Signs were posted warning everyone to stay away from the enclosures because the snakes were poisonous. Well, the zookeeper went into several of the little areas and picked up snakes and showed us. Then he hopped into the containment that held the Black Mamba.

Now a Black Mamba has one of the most deadly toxins of any snake. It can kill in less than 20 minutes. Black Mamba bites are nearly always fatal. Plus, the snake moves exceedingly fast, capable of moving 10–12 mph per second. So when this guy stepped in the cage, we all froze in horror. Then, instead of grabbing a snake pole to handle the creature, he reached down and grabbed it behind the neck.

But wait, there’s more: he missed and the snake lunged at him, narrowly missing. Then he TRIED AGAIN! He was able to get the snake and force it to open its jaws so we could see inside. By then I was too terrified to look closely. I didn’t relax until he had safely left the enclosure. A feat I wasn’t sure he’d be able to do. After that, we quickly moved over to the iguana cage where holding was encouraged and completely safe. Whew!

I have many more stories about zoos and game preserves in Africa, but this one just scared me again merely thinking about it. I think I’m going to go do something safe and calm like cuddle my dogs.
plantfoodhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08394524009296526413noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6466058032603963113.post-83052312921370175822013-04-19T07:09:04.116+01:002013-04-19T07:09:04.116+01:00Yes please!!!
